In essence, it is Joanne Harris at her very best! Anxious about being recognised and causing old enmities to awaken, but wanting to connect with her roots after a long exile, Framboise hopes for a new beginning. For me this is the second book I am reading of Ms Harris and I tell you I am already a fan.

I finished it all too quickly, scarfing it down like an orange at Christmas time.I found this at my grandparents house on a trip when I hadn't brought anything to read. It is almost guaranteed for me that a Joanne Harris novel is going to be very well-written. Though I have grown weary, in general, of books about WWII, this one drew me in and held my attention. (But nouvelle cuisine equals highly unreliable.) It is one of those books I need to read again to fully understand, and pay attention more the second time, but I don't know if I really want to take the time to do so.

I have to say that reading this novel made me appreciate Gentlemen and Players a bit more.

I'm not a big fan of wartime historical fiction, and I honestly wouldn't have picked up this book if I knew that going in.I started off enjoying this book.

From trading scraps of information for Gauloises, they spiralled through witnessing German rumpy-pumpy in the village bar (with one dead body on the pavement) to fleeing the parish pursued by a mob who were convinced that the children's mother had informed on the apparent slaying of a German soldier by the Résistance.

I loved Framboise as a narrator and I liked that I got to see a different side to wartime rather than the usual fighting. In Chocolat she created a magical place, full of interesting characters with all kinds of flaws.



It's a time-slip novel set in the late 90s and war-time, with the main protagonist, Framboise, narrating her own story and that of the mystery of a German soldier, Tomas. I think I was just being impatient.
