On top of the great premise and elaborate set-up, there's the comedic aspect to the story. O'Keefe must spend the million in two months to obtain the real prize - seven million dollars. Comedy It's a shame, as although he may not have had 'the look', he was quite enjoyable in gangster and light comedy films. The writing is superbly paced, loads of witty single-take scenes that, by half way, make you want to have someone ring a bell and offer you a towel. Back in high school, I'd read about BREWSTER'S MILLIONS (1945) in Peter Noble's "The Negro in Films" and how it was banned in Memphis when it came out because "the Negro acted too snappy and socialized too much with white actors in the film," a reference to Eddie "Rochester" Anderson's role in the film. The only player I recognized was Eddie "Rochester" Anderson whom I knew from "The Jack Benny Program" on radio and TV. Throwing money around thoughtlessly makes O'Keefe look like an irresponsible jerk to his loved ones--and to the audience as well.

Where has this wonderfully funny movie been hiding all these years? His deceased uncle believes O'Keefe should "learn to hate spending money." Check the Brewster's Millions (1945) trailer! These Dwan/O'Keefe gems were not so much the Three Stooges/Marx Bros./Lucy breathless kind of silly as they were softer slapstick fare. So on that note, I highly recommend this version of Brewster's Millions.

Well, upon finally seeing it again on TCM, on February 2, 2009, like several other of your commentators, I still think it's a delightful experience, and I couldn't believe my ears when it was announced to be broadcast as a TCM premiere.
