I am not surprised that the composer himself calls this the greatest performance of the concerto, and I can't think of why any classical guitar lover wouldn't want to own this CD. Sketches of Spain is an album by Miles Davis, recorded between November 1959 and March 1960 at the Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City.An extended version of the second movement of Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez (1939) is included, as well as a piece called "Will o' the Wisp", from Manuel de Falla's ballet El amor brujo (1914–1915). Which enables the listener to really appreciate the virtuoso guitar parts Rodrigues wrote even for passages where the guitar isn't taking centre-stage, and the way they're performed on this recording by Paco de Lucia, a flamenco guitarist rather then a classical player.

The Concierto de Aranjuez was inspired by the gardens at Palacio Real de Aranjuez, the spring resort palace and gardens built by Philip II in the last half of the 16th century and rebuilt in the middle of the 18th century by Ferdinand VI.The work attempts to transport the listener to another place and time through the evocation of the sounds of nature.
