Saras and Dusty covered it well, but just to clarify, No it isnt a touch or ranged touch attack (those are the only spells that need hit rolls. Phantasmal Killer allows 2 saves, so it work less often than any other spells, and on higher difficulty it is hard to get higher level mobs to fail 2 saves... That'd be true for other schools, but you can actually get your illusion spells DC extremly high in this game. Only the spell's target can see the killer, though you can see the vague shape of the illusion as it races forth to attack. I'm not sure I understand the question, but I'll try: Phantasmal Killer always hit, then the target can succed a will save to cancel it entirely (they recognise it's an illusion), then if they fail that they can succed a fortitude save to take 3 to 18 damage instead of dying. The effect of the killer is based on the outcome of the target's Will … You might scrub a firey salamander and re-define them as a brutal, humanoid porcupine warrior leading a band of mutated beast-folk. yeah, stupid me can not read. It's pretty terrible as far as save or loses go.Yeah I mean the premise of the question couldn't be further from the truth.Apart from the above, it's a mind-affecting effect, an illusion, a fear effect, So by the time you even have access to the spell (earliest possible level 7) you are encountering various enemies with plenty of immunity and bonuses spread out.I mean for christ sake, Paladins are entirely immune to the spell Overall the spell was weak when SoS were king in 3.5 and 3.0 and it Not to mention the whole "if they are wearing a helm of telepathy..." which is basically just a big opportunity for a GM to completely fuck a player over with a super specific item choice (or vice versa).Yeah but there are lots of racial and feat stuff to raise the DC of fear and illusion spells specifically. !RPGs are a medium of imagination and description; like poetry you can keep the structure but change the words you use to get an entirely different result. I don't like pulling punches but nobody is going to be happy with getting killed by it.This is probably a far more relevant reason to ban it rather than it being OP.As you say, no matter what - if this spell is used someone will be annoyed because the result is generally anticlimactic. I could change the description of their ranged attack to be a bow, but I like the idea that their elegant voices can shatter steel and bone. I’ll round out the adventure with a few as-is statblocks as well and pick out a few maps and then I think I’m ready to go!The Know Direction Network is your premier source for Pathfinder and Starfinder coverage, from podcasts to blogs and more!Every two weeks, the Know Direction podcast covers Pathfinder with news, reviews, and interviews, recorded live in front of a Twitch audience and available for download wherever you get your podcasts.Once a month, Know Direction goes Beyond, extending our signature coverage to the growing universe of Starfinder. Effects [edit | edit source] You implant within the minds of your targets the illusion that they are engulfed in tangled webs teeming with swarms of tiny spiders.
But I’ll change their Weakness to Poison, their magic type to Primal, and add a few illusion spells. The Sidhe need obsequious little warriors to carry out their wills, and I’d like it if they were sneaky as well, something I could use a slavering, high-pitched voice to describe. And it still does something even on a successful second save, even if it's meagre damage, it's better than nothing.IMO, cool, suboptimal spell that will have a great effect once in a blue moon.
