The Machine That Changed the World; The Story of Lean Production A great book that although becoming a little outdated portrays the ongoing trends in the automobile production industry in three major cultural areas. Authoritative, informative and very readable. The authors, Womack, Jones, and Roos, suggest that lean production can be used outside of automobile manufacturing by adapting its principles to traditional mass production of many kinds.
However, the full power of lean principles was unproven, and they had not been applied outside of the auto industry. In his book review, MIT then-student wrote that the history of lean manufacturing began with artisans prior to the industrial revolution when standardized supplies were not yet available to enable large production runs. This was the very first Lean book I ever read and it changed my life forever. Would recommend it to anyone in operations and not just in manufacturing but any industry.
